It happens several times a year. Loudoun, the statistics and surveys tell us, is the best county in America to live. We’re the happiest place in the U.S. The richest. The fastest-growing. The most romantic.
It’s not that we disagree. It’s just our profession dictates that we take these listicles with a grain of salt.
We in the modern news business know these surveys make for irresistible clickbait – for fun, rapid-speed blurbs. Sure, we’ll report on them. We’ll underscore them. Because, hey, the methodology is interesting, and who doesn’t revel in knowing “their town is No. 1?”
As we embark on a new Times-Mirror, with a major shift in format and a slight shift in focus, we reflect on why we love this community. We invite you to do the same. How do you kill an afternoon in Loudoun? What is your hidden gem? Share it with someone. Share it with us.

“First, I’d like to thank my predecessor Supervisor Janet Clarke for her dedicated, faithful and effective service to the community! With that said, I want to thank you for putting your trust in me as your next Blue Ridge District Supervisor. Having taken office on January 1st, I’m honored for the opportunity to represent your best interest and have already begun working hard to do so!
In order to keep you updated, my office will be sending out quarterly “Newsletter” emails regarding what we are doing here at the Blue Ridge District office. Additionally, you’ll receive “Newsflash” and “Mark Your Calendar” emails as needed.
While I’ve only been in office for a month, we’ve included several important updates to keep you informed. This includes transportation projects within our district, the upcoming budget process, coming events, my recent Board and Regional Committee assignments and other useful information.”

Surprised? Didn’t think so. Loudoun County is again the fastest-growing in Virginia, according to research released today from the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.
Loudoun was home to 374,471 residents as of July 2015, UVA’s research states. That figure is up nearly 20 percent from the 2010 census that counted the population at 312,311. Read more here.
A baby girl was born at 8:50am on January 1, 2016. She was delivered by Dr. Ayoub, weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces, and is 19 inches long.
The findings and recommendations from the scenario study were presented to the Board of Supervisors on January 21st. You can download and view the final report at www.loudoun.gov/silverlinecpam. At the meeting, the Board voted to further discuss development of a Small Area Plan in the Transportation and Land Use Committee (TLUC).
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the Transportation and Land Use Committee’s recommendation on Thursday, March 17, 2016. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., in the Board Room on the first floor of the Loudoun County Government Center. 1 Harrison Street, S.E., in Leesburg. The meeting will be televised on Comcast Government Channel 23, Open Band Channel 40, and Verizon FiOS Channel 40. It will also be available for viewing through the Loudoun County webcast system.
The Board Item will be posted here once final.
“We have continued to build momentum through good weather prior to the recent snow storm, and work is continuing,” said Kevin Volbrecht, Project Director for Phase 2, Package A. “The storm didn’t impact the critical underground hand-mining for future utilities in the Dulles airport highway corridor.” Hand mining is required because of vast amounts of below-grade granite in the corridor.
Crews working on the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project successfully completed a significant operation on Jan. 8, by pouring 473 cubic yards of concrete needed to construct a large “straddle bent” over the Dulles International Airport Access Highway. A straddle bent supports a structure that spans a particularly wide area where piers cannot be used directly beneath the span.
As the project continues, it will require seven additional large straddle bents on or near airport property, including two more over the eastbound Access Highway lanes and one over the westbound lanes. This work is scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2016. Work on the four remaining straddle bents over the eastbound lanes of the Dulles Greenway is projected to begin in late 2016. Read the full Dulles Metro February Update here.
The county continues to prepare for the arrival of rail service and the opening of two Loudoun County Metro stations, Loudoun Gateway (formerly known as Route 606) and Ashburn (formerly known as Route 772). Service to the Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn Stations is expected to begin in 2020.
