The new year is here and with the new year comes new trends for the home. I recently had the opportunity to tour a gorgeous model home located in Ashburn, Virginia. Northern Virginia is where I call home and is also one of the fastest growing areas in the country. With the population growth comes the need for new homes being built. Ashburn, Virginia is one of the fastest growing towns in Northern Virginia and is leading the way in home trends. The home I was able to tour one of the model homes in the coveted Brambleton neighborhood.
The Aria is a model home in Miller & Smith’s West Park Collection and exhibits everything a homeowner could want in a home– between open floor plans and attention to detail everywhere you look.
The Kitchen
It is no surprise that the white kitchen trend is carrying on into 2019. Personally, I love the trend and recently had my cabinets painted white. It literally transformed our space! The white in the kitchen allows for the natural light to beautifully enter the space reflect off into the open space around it. I love how clean and crisp it makes the kitchen look as well. Another trend we are seeing in the kitchen is the overextended island. The Aria model had an island that was to die for! I could imagine all the perfect ways I could use the space for dining and especially for entertaining. The overextended island trend is something I believe we will be seeing for a long time as we continue to enjoy to entertain others in our homes.
Some people might be afraid that the white might be “too much” but I like to break up the white by adding neutral colors and pops of greenery throughout. Adding these elements makes the room pop and appeal to the eyes.
A breakfast nook is quickly becoming a popular trend in homes. I am a huge fan of the bench seating and find it perfect for the family! I think this space looks so inviting and cozy! Can’t you just picture yourself here enjoying your morning cup of coffee? I sure can!
The kitchen is the gathering place of the home so it is no surprise that we see the emphasis placed on the kitchen in every home. A large pantry and more cabinet space are also one of the highly requested features in a kitchen. You can never have enough storage in my opinion!
Having a versatile open floor plan such as the Aria home I toured is essential in creating that open feel throughout the main floor.
Entertaining Space
Whether you are looking to host your next dinner party, have your family over for the holidays, or just looking to keep the kids happy, entertaining spaces in the home are a must for 2019! The Aria model is the most perfect example of a home fit for entertaining. As I had mentioned above, the kitchen is the center of all home entertainment but it doesn’t have to stop there! A trend that definitely is continuing into 2019 is more entertainment space. Maybe that space is outdoors with a beautiful patio or a finished basement complete with a full bar and game room like the Aria model had. Either way, having more than one option for entertainment space is ideal in any home.
I personally loved the kids (and grown-ups) play/ game room that was located in the finished basement in the Aria model. It had a very modern flair to it which makes for a very aesthetically appealing playroom. I brought my kids along to test it out and they highly approved of the fun space! The kids can have their own room to play their games but the grown-ups can enjoy it as well so it serves as a dual purpose!
Another highlight of the Aria was the large full bar in the basement. This is the ultimate entertaining room! Guests can head downstairs where you can serve your favorite glass of wine or custom cocktail with this incredible modern bar. As someone who loves to host parties, this home bar is a dream!
Your Own Spa
Ok, so maybe a spa in your home is a little far fetched (unless you are Hollywood elite) but who says you can’t create your own little oasis in your home? The bathroom can sometimes get overlooked but it is the perfect place to create your own little place of zen in the home. The Aria model had a gorgeous bathroom with an oversized shower (with the option to add a tub) and his and her sinks.
Keep the colors bright but neutral for that open and airy look. Add touches of florals for a soft and relaxing feel to the room. Using the color white in the bathroom gives an overall clean feeling. Use white towels in place of colored ones to achieve this look.
l loved the added touch of the plush ottoman in the room for a place to sit and relax. Create a space that is inviting by adding little touches you often see in hotels or spas like rolled towels and artisan soaps.
Thinking Ahead
I recently heard of a new trend in new homes that I never thought of before but it definitely got me thinking into my future! This new trend is having a space for your parents (or in-laws) or “boomerang kids” that is liveable and like their own little studio apartment. As we choose our forever home we often overlook the fact that one day we might be caring for our aging parents. Why not plan ahead and have a space that we can use as a guest suite now and a mini studio apartment for them later? Or maybe our kids will have to come back home after college a need a place to stay while they get on their feet.
I fell in love with the studio above the garage at the Aria model. It had a mini kitchen, bathroom, and spacious living area. After I toured the model I went home and told my husband all about it and how smart it is to think ahead and have a space that can accommodate our parents or grown kids. This is something I didn’t think about before but I’m so glad I know about it now!
Your Home, Your Happy Place
No matter what your style or preference in your home might be, the important thing is that your home makes you happy. The overall trend for homes in 2019 is to make your home a place you enjoy coming home to and a place that makes it hard to leave. Having customizable options in a home as you can have with the Aria model I toured is the ideal way to create your happy space. You can also make changes to your home now by getting inspiration around you and touring model homes that showcase the new trends just as I did.
Home is the place where we feel happy and where we create some of our best memories with the ones we love. Having a home that makes you happy…well there is no better home than that!
